Microchipping and Lifetime RegistrationLast modified: June 2, 2009 - 4:05 PM
The NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 requires all dogs and cats which are born, or who change owners after 1 July 1999 to be microchipped and registered. Microchipping A Companion Animal must be identified/microchipped as required by the regulations from the time the animal is 12 weeks old. A Companion Animal must not be sold or given away unless it is identified/microchipped as required by the regulations (even if it is less than 12 weeks old when it is sold or given away). The owner of an animal is quilty of an offence if the animal is not identified/microchipped as required by the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998. Microchipping is a painless procedure carried out by a Vet or an authorised implanter. The microchip number and the owners details will be added to the Statewide Register to enable companion animals to be identified and reunited with their owner. It is for this reason, should your details change at any time that you contact your local council and fill in the applicable form so they can change the details on the register to keep them current. Lifetime Registration Lifetime Registration takes place after your pet is microchipped and is a one off payment. Payment is to be made at your local council. Lifetime Registration fees are: $150 Non-desexed dog or cat $40 Desexed dog or cat (proof required) $15 Desexed dog or cat owned by a pensioner (proof required) $40 Dog or cat owned by a registered breeder (proof required)When you LIfetime Register your're companion animal, you need to bring to Council all the relevant forms, eg. Microchipping Form, Sterilization Form, Pension Card, Breeders Card and pay the applicable fee. Once microchipped and registered, your pet is protected for life. If you sell or give away your companion animal a change of owner/detail form needs to be completed and signed by both the old and new owner. You can obtain this form from the Council's Office. It is the responsibility of the old owner to return this form to their local council to get the details changed or else the old owner will be liable for any offences the companion animal may incur. This process is a free service as long as your companion animal is already michrochipped and lifetime registered. Responsibilities of Pet Owners To ensure the comfort, safety and health of the whole community the Companion Animals Act places certain responsibilities on all pet owners.
