Narraburra Cup

2007 Narraburra Cup Winners - Published: 19 Nov 2007
Gidginbund farmers Robert, Kathlee and Lincoln Macauley have won the 2007 Narraburra Cup Soil Conservation Competition. The prestigious trophy was presented during a dinner at Temora Ex-Services Memorial Club on Wednesday night in the club's Narraburra Room. The Macauley's farm 'Roselyn' a 531 hectare holding 15 kilometres north of Temora, won this year ahead of three other entrants.

The Narraburra Cup is the oldest competition of its kind in the southern hemisphere and was launched in 1938 by the former Narraburra Shire Council, with the support of the Temora and Ariah Park Show Societies. Once again, Lachlan Catchment Management Authority was the major sponsor for the competition in conjunction with Temora Shire Council. Judges this year were CMA Catchment Coordinator Mark Leary and 2006 Narraburra Cup winner, Pat Thorne. For the first time the previous year's winner was asked to sit on the judging panel a move expected to continue for future competitions.

In opening the proceedings Mayor Peter Speirs announced that although there were only half as many entries this year, the quality of those received was still excellent. Cr Speirs encouraged those who sat on the sidelines to consider entering next year.

CMA Catchment Officer Dan Francis presented Rob Macauley with the Narraburra Cup reading out the judges comments. "The Macauleys are well-deserved of this prestigious award because of their holistic approach to farming and conservation of the soil, water and vegetation on their property. Their ability to forward plan using Albrecht soil testing and yeild mapping and implement these practices for cropping, take advantage of opportunity grazing and managing stubbles for high levels of grouund cover help, will ensure their property remains productive for many years to come. more ..
