Council was named the winner for 2008/09 in the Shires Association section of the prestigious awards. The announcement was made on Sunday 24th October, 2009 by A.R Bluett Memorial Trust chairman, John Flannery, during the Local Government Association conference at Tamworth. The award is presented each year to the council, which in the opinion of the trustees, has made the greatest relative progress. Presented each year since 1945, it is the highest accolade to which a council can aspire. Temora last won the A.R Bluett Award in 1981, the first year of the newly amalgamated Temora Shire Council. For this years awards, Council prepared a 30 page submission, outlining its many achievements of the past 12 months. Among these were the upgrade of Temora Town Hall, including the establishment of the cinema, the inaugural Sustainable Lifestyle Expo, the Bush Buck initiative, Temora Airfield Tourist Park and its planned cabins, surveillance cameras for the main street area and of course the aviation estate. Councils General Manager, was likewise ecstatic with Temora's achievement. Cr Speirs said he understood the award would be presented in Temora, before Christmas. Planning would begin shortly, he said on a suitable celebration to mark the occasion.

The design of the new information brochure was presented to Temora Shire Council for approval at its October meeting by Temora Visitor Information Centre Manager. 40,000 copies of the new brochure would be produced. The previous brochure produced by Council was limited to 25,000 copies, which had run out in less tan two years, adding that it was hoped the increased number of brochures would last up to three years. Highlighting some points of interest, the annual events calendar in the brochure was a difficult component to compile, as events to be included needed to run for another three years, and could not just be one off occassions. The population for the shire recorded in the brochure was 6,101 people noting this was the population recorded at the last census. Temora's elevation was a new addition to local information provided in the brochure. A number of further changes were also suggested by councillors, in raising the profile of several local sites including Temora Recreation Centre and Lake Centenary. it was agreed to adopt the design of the brochure in principle, with councillors to review the text of the brochure in the following days before reporting back to the Temora Visitor Information Centre Manager with any suggested changes.

Tips for control include: Clean up trees and remove old fruit (lemons, grape fruit, navel oranges, mandarins, etc) remove the trees if you no longer want them or cant manage the fruit. Put pots out now to control the fruit fly. Top up the pots every 2 weeks* from now until autumn. Even if you don't have a fruit tree you can still help the fight by placing a pot in your back yard. Fruit Fly will start to become active and begin to lay eggs in Loquats within the next four weeks closely followed by Apricots so we need to control them now before they get a chance to infect our fruit and our vegetables. This is the first step to growing fruit we can actually eat. How to make a Fruit Fly Pot Take a 2 litre milk container, keep the lid on. Cut three holes in the bottle about the size of a 10 cent piece 10 centimetres from the top. Put a string around the lid and hang in a tree in the shade at about 1 - 1 1/2 metres high. Mixture 2 large tablespoons of vegemite 2 large tablespoons on ammonia bleach 2 - 3 drops on insecticide (see your local nursery) Fill the bottle with about 10cm of water in which you dissolved the vegemite, bleach and insecticide *In very hot conditions swap the vegemite/water with fresh orange juice to reduce the capture of blow flies and change the mixture weekly.

Built by local contractors and staffed by a small army of local volunteers, the facility was hailed as a true community asset. New South Wales Minister for Regional Development, Phillip Costa, performed the opening, accompanied by Member for Murrumbidgee, Adrian Piccoli. Temora Shire Council General Manager, Gary Lavelle, acted as master of ceremonies and opened the proceedings, describing the theatre as a fine addition to the cultural landscape of Temora. In addition, TYRO gave up its headquarters in the former town library, which was duly redeveloped as the Town Hall Theatre. As well as the $30,000 or so contributed by TYRO the State Government provided a grant of $100,000 through Arts New South Wales. Cinema, theatre and conference all rolled into one, the 82 seat facility was designed to be as flexible as possible. It includes a small performance stage, ideal for dance or musical performances, and the lighting and sound equipment systems designed with live entertainment in mind. Meanwhile, as a cinema, it can handle most movie formats - 35mm film, e-Cinema, DVD, CD and Blu-Ray. After the welcome by Cr Speirs two live performances were given to demonstrate the stage area. Council Director of Environmental Services, Kris Dunstan was called to give a brief overview of the theatre in his capacity as project manager for the development. A segment from the Temora Aviation Mseum DVD was screened to demonstrate the cinema aspect of the theatre. The launch was followed by a light lunch and a tour of the facility. Afterwards two movies were screened, the first of which was 'Adventure of Dot" a 21 minute silent movie filmed in Temora in the 1920'S. This proved highly entertaining for the audience, many of whom stayed for the second film Night at the Museum 2, which demonstrated the full technological capabilities of the cinema.
