Temora Shire Council has been asked by the local police to consider declaring the entire heart of Temora an alcohol free zone. Council was approached in a letter due to be tabled at May Council meeting. In the letter it cited several reasons for the request, namely, numerous incidents of property damage, littering, personal injury and the need for police intervention. The area subject to the proposal is that bounded by DeBoos, Crowley, Parkes and Britannia Street. the affected area also extended along Hoskins and Victoria Street for a block either side of these boundaries. Under the proposal, it would be forbidden to consumer alcohol on the roads, footpaths, parks and car parks within the zone. Statistics were also included in the letter; 79 incidents which occurred after those involved had left licensed premises, and 316 incidents actually on licensed premises or in a liquor outlet. 28 incidents occurred within view of a hotel of a hotel or club. An alarming 337 police incidents involved the offender consuming alcohol prior to the incident. These figures all occurred in Temora within the past 12 months. Contact details |
