Fatigue-related crashes can happen on any trip no matter how long or short they are and can occur at any time of day. Fatigue is one of the three biggest killers on NSW roads.

‘If you are asleep at the wheel, you can’t brake’.

Statistics reveal that fatigue accounts for 25.9% of crashes within the Temora shire. It is important to think about how tired you are before driving, recognise the early warning signs when driving and know what to do to avoid driving tired.

Some of the early warning signs of Fatigue are:

  • Yawning
  • Poor concentration
  • Sore or tired eyes
  • Restlessness
  • Drowsiness
  • Boredom

The only way to overcome fatigue is to rest, if you feel tired when driving pull over in a safe place and take a break, stop at a Driver Reviver , they operate during school holidays or drop into a country town on your trip, have a coffee or lunch and maybe take a brisk short walk.

Rest areas allow you to stretch your legs and/or have a 20 minute nap to refresh. Even if you don’t feel tired, take a break anyway to just enjoy the journey.

The Transport for NSW website has online rest area maps with roadside locations throughout NSW. Rest areas allow you to stretch your legs and/or have a 20 minute nap to refresh.

Even if you don’t feel tired, take a break anyway to just enjoy the journey.

Before you drive Plan Your Trip:

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Arrange to share the driving, if possible
  • Plan regular breaks along the way
  • Avoid driving at night or very early in the morning when your body naturally wants to sleep

REMBER: SLEEP IS THE ONLY WAY TO OVERCOME TIREDNESS!
