Drive Safely in Foggy Conditions, Drivers Urged

Motorists are being reminded to take extra care when driving in fog, with reduced visibility significantly increasing the risk of crashes.

Mr Steven Bloomfield, Council Road Safety Officer, said drivers should adjust their driving to suit the conditions.

“Fog can reduce visibility dramatically and make it difficult to see other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, wildlife and road hazards,” Mr Bloomfield said.

“Drivers should slow down, increase the distance between vehicles, use low-beam headlights, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes.”

Mr Bloomfield advises motorists to use fog lights only when visibility is seriously reduced and to switch them off once conditions improve.

Drivers should also ensure their windscreen is clean and demisted before starting a journey.

“If visibility becomes too poor to continue safely, find a safe place away from traffic to stop and wait for conditions to improve,” Mr Bloomfield said.

“Taking a few extra precautions can help keep everyone safe on our roads during foggy weather.”
