NRSW: Plan Your Journey
Published on 22 May 2026
Motorists and riders across New South Wales are being urged to prioritise safety when planning road trips, with experts highlighting simple steps that can significantly reduce crash risk.
Council Road Safety Officer Steven Bloomfield says preparation is just as important as behaviour behind the wheel. “A safe journey starts before you leave your driveway,” he explains, pointing to basic vehicle checks and route planning as critical first steps.
Transport authorities agree. Transport for NSW recommends mapping your trip in advance by using its interactive rest area tools which show more than 650 locations across the state. These maps allow drivers to identify facilities such as toilets, fuel stops and shaded areas, helping you plan regular breaks and manage fatigue.
Fatigue remains a major contributor to crashes, with drivers advised to stop at least every two hours to rest and refresh.
Pre-journey vehicle checks are another key safety measure. Mr Bloomfield advises drivers and riders to ensure tyres, lights, fuel levels and fluid systems are in good condition before setting off, particularly for long-distance travel.
Distraction management is also a major focus. According to Transport for NSW, anything that takes your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel or mind off driving increases crash risk. Even a two-second lapse in attention can double the likelihood of a collision.
Common distractions include mobile phones, passengers, loose items and in-vehicle technology. Drivers are encouraged to set navigation before departure, secure loose objects and minimise in-car interruptions.
Passengers can play a positive role by assisting with navigation and limiting distractions, helping the driver maintain focus throughout the journey.
With road trauma still a significant concern in NSW, authorities stress that safe journey planning, regular rest breaks and focused driving are simple but effective ways to protect all road users.
