Work Continues on Temporary Bridge at Wallendbeen

Work is continuing on the construction of a temporary bridge on Burley Griffin Way at Wallendbeen to restore this critical connection for road users as quickly as possible.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said a 62-tonne piling rig has driven in steel in-ground supports for the placement of the 210-piece temporary bridge.

“Crews have faced prolonged wet weather and found soft ground conditions on site to be less than ideal, requiring an additional steel support structure to be manufactured and installed,” Ms Cooke said.

“As a consequence, the new temporary bridge is expected to open to traffic in late October, weather permitting.”

“We understand the significant impact the 40-minute detour is having on the community, motorists and freight operators, however this additional structure will ensure the crossing is safe.

“We want to assure the community that more than 20 people are on site every single day working extremely hard to complete this work.

Once this is completed, the crane will be positioned on a large concrete slab and will lift the bridge onto the supports, allowing the construction of the road approaches to the bridge.

Work is being carried out weekdays from 6.30am to 5.30pm, weather permitting. The crew are working with a COVIDSafe plan in place.

During work, Burley Griffin Way will remain closed at the railway line. Motorists should continue to use the detour via the Olympic Highway and Goldfields Way during this time.

Transport for NSW will make every effort to minimise impacts on the community and keep traffic moving during this work.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control. Please allow up to five minutes extra travel times while work is under way.
