Council Endorses Submission to Shape Regional Transport Future
Temora Shire Council will formally endorse its submission to the NSW Government regarding the development of the Riverina Murray Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan (SRITP), reinforcing the critical importance of safe, effective and efficient transport infrastructure to the future of the Temora community.
Based on Temora Shire’s geographic location and local demographics, transport infrastructure and services are fundamental determinants of living standards and economic prosperity. Council’s submission outlines a series of key priorities that reflect local conditions, long-standing community concerns and the strategic importance of Temora within the regional freight and transport network.
Mayor Rick Firman OAM said Council’s submission reflects years of advocacy on behalf of the community.
“This submission clearly outlines the transport challenges facing our Temora township and the practical solutions we believe are necessary to support our community’s safety and economic growth.”
Freight Transport Through Urban Temora
Freight movements through urban Temora present ongoing challenges relating to road safety, community amenity and infrastructure wear. As freight volumes increase, the impact on local roads, businesses and residents continues to intensify, highlighting the need for strategic regional planning solutions.
Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route
Hoskins Street, the focal point of Temora’s central business district, functions as the community’s primary retail, dining and pedestrian precinct. Despite this important place function, the street also operates as part of the regional and national freight network, carrying growing volumes of heavy vehicles.
Mayor Firman said Council’s advocacy for a Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route remains one of its highest priorities.
“Council has been advocating for a Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route for over 20 years. This is not a new issue — it is a long-standing safety and economic priority for Temora Shire.
“Removing heavy freight from our CBD will improve safety, enhance the visitor experience and strengthen our local economy.”
Local Road Funding
Local roads are a vital component of the regional transport network. They facilitate freight connections, link rural farms to markets, connect rural communities to urban centres, and enable social and economic participation across the Shire.
The maintenance, renewal and upgrade of the local road network — including associated assets — represent the single largest financial burden on local communities and the councils that serve them. Council’s submission calls for sustainable, long-term funding solutions to ensure regional road networks remain safe and fit for purpose.
Transport Access and Service Gaps
Council recognises significant gaps in the paved footpath network across Temora and its associated villages. Following consistent community feedback, Council is investing in accelerating footpath construction within its financial capacity to improve accessibility, safety and mobility for residents.
Taxi Service
In early 2024, Temora lost its only long-term private taxi service. Since that time, the private market has failed to re-establish this essential service, leaving a significant transport gap within the community. Council’s submission highlights the need for consideration of regional transport services that address such service shortfalls.
Temora Aerodrome
Temora Shire Council welcomes exploration of commercial transport opportunities that could co-exist with existing operations at the Temora Aerodrome. The aerodrome represents a strategic regional asset with potential to support broader transport connectivity and economic development outcomes.
Mayor Firman said Council have worked with our current NSW Regional Transport & Roads Minister – The Hon Jenny Aitchison MP, and her door is always open.
“We’ve shown her the issues so at least she’s seen first-hand what we’re contending with. We believe Minister Aitchison has a desire to want to help us solve this ongoing problem. Our Shire community need urgent, financial support to solve this serious safety issue.”
