Council seeks community feedback on Tewksbury Road land classification

Temora Shire Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed classification of recently acquired land on Tewksbury Road, Temora.

Ownership of Lots 854 and 857 Tewksbury Road, Temora (Lots 854 and 857, DP 750587) was transferred to Council on Friday 26 June 2026.

The land was purchased as the proposed site for a future stormwater detention basin, following a recommendation of the Temora Floodplain Risk Management Plan.

Mayor Rick Firman OAM said the classification process was an important step in planning for the future use of the land.

“We know this land has an important role to play in the future management of stormwater in Temora,” Mayor Firman said.

“Before we move forward, we want to make sure our shire community has an opportunity to understand what is being proposed and provide any feedback they may have.”

Under the Local Government Act 1993, all public land acquired by Council must be classified as either community land or operational land within three months of acquisition. Council is required to publicly notify its proposed classification and provide an opportunity for the community to make submissions.

Operational land is generally land that does not need to be retained for public access or use and can be sold, leased or otherwise dealt with by Council. In this case, the land is considered suitable for operational classification due to its intended use for Council infrastructure.

Community land, on the other hand, is generally intended for public access and use and is subject to greater restrictions, including restrictions on Council's ability to sell or dispose of the land.

Council resolved to place the proposed classification of Lots 854 and 857 Tewksbury Road on public exhibition for 28 days.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Graham Sinclair moved the recommendation, which was seconded by Councillor Ken Smith. The motion was carried unanimously.

If no submissions are received during the exhibition period, Council will consider classifying the land as operational land.

If the land is not formally classified within three months of acquisition, it is automatically classified as community land under the Local Government Act 1993.
