An EV Charger to be installed in Temora

Electric vehicle charging company EVX have requested Council consider installation of a 22kW pole mounted EV charger within Temora Shire at no cost to Council.

Council is supportive of the charger recognising that in time there will be more demand for electronic vehicle chargers. Currently Temora Shire has one public charger available in the carpark next to the Council Chambers on Loftus Street.

Council would be required to provide the 2 x parks, signage and line marking at the site.

Late last year, Council staff asked EVX to supply Council with their preferred location for installation. EVX responded in late January with a site on Loftus Street between Hoskins Street and Baker Street.

At the February Council meeting, Councillors discussed locations in detail. Cr Jason Goode suggested further west on Loftus Street, across from the Terminus Hotel, explaining “it is near hotels, motels and the (Temora Ex-servies) club. Which would be convenient if drivers are staying overnight. With extra benefit of not taking up spaces near the main street.”

Cr Anothony Irvine agreed with the placement suggested by Cr Goode. Cr Irvine mentioned that he has done his own investigation of the EVX preferred site at different times of the days, stated that it is “heavily utilised by the public, which would be an inconvenience to local users and rate payers.” Further explaining that it is likely that use of this charger would be low in the first instance.

Deputy Mayor Graham Sinclair raised concerns with the location proposed by Cr Goode and supported by Cr Irvine. Cr Sinclair said that this site “would not be as safe and secure as the original site proposed.”

Cr Claire McLaren suggested Council consider spaces near the Temora Town Hall, “being less utilised currently, but only a block to walk to the main street.”

After much debate, Council resolved to advise EXV that Council’s preferred location is opposite the Terminus Hotel on the southern side of Loftus Street, and that if that position not be satisfactory, that EVX provide a list of options for Council to consider. The resolution was moved by Cr Goode and seconded by Cr Irvine.
