Kindy Kits inspire our next generatio

The Kindy Kits project aims to reduce waste at school and promote sustainable options to young children and their parents.

Since the Kindy Kits Project began in 2004, over 30,500 library bags have been given to kindergarten students in the Riverina Region.

Over 1,800 library bags containing information that promotes the message "No Waste in my Lunchbox" are distributed to kindergarten students across the Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils (REROC) region during the first week of school each year.

In 2024 Temora Shire schools received 90 Kindy Kits from REROC, with 30 new students at Temora Public, 25 at St. Anne’s Catholic College, 10 at Ariah Park Central and 25 at Temora West Public on their way to a sustainable future.

Chairman of REROC, Temora Shire’s Mayor Rick Firman had the honour of delivering the kits to Temora Public School’s 2024 Kindergarten class.

“REROC’s waste forum is very active in Riverina communities, but this is one of my favourites to deliver each year. It helps children start their journey, assists our stretched teachers with environment resources for class, and reminds our parents of what they can do at home to reduce, reuse, and recycle” said Mayor Firman.

The character Recycle Roo is used to promote the reduce, reuse, recycle message via worksheets for the students, also included in the materials is a colourful brochure that gives parents valuable tips on how to reduce lunchbox waste.

The resource materials are used to create in-class discussion on both environmental and waste issues. A letter is included in the library bag explaining the project and resource materials are also included for parents to encourage them to discuss these issues with their children.

“If you haven’t seen your blue Recycle Roo bag come home, make sure you ask their teacher about it!” Mayor Firman concluded.
